Healing Classes in SWTOR

After looking at the class list in SWTOR, many players are wondering what exactly the healing classes are. After all, the class list makes no mention of a true healing class. Fortunately, I have seen some gameplay videos and have been able to update this SWTOR guide with some information on the healing classes.

Jedi Consular

The Jedi Consular is the Galatic Republic’s primary healer. After glancing at the site and watching the gameplay videos there, you might be operating under the assumption that the Jedi is a hybrid class which uses its lightsaber and force manipulation to deal damage. While this is true, it is not a completely clear picture.

After watching a video of gameplay, I found that the SWTOR healing classes play a lot like healers in other games. The boss fight play for a group of 4 showed the Jedi Consular hanging in the back and primarily clicking on healing spells and party health bars to keep the damage dealers and tank alive.

During the boss encounter, the Jedi Consular did use an occasional lightsaber swing and force abilities to kill off weakened mobs, but primarily engaged in healing very similar to other MMOs. At this time, the stance of this SWTOR guide is that healing in SWTOR is much like in other MMOs.

Other Healing Classes

The Sith Inquisitor is the primary healer of the Sith Empire. While specializations for the Jedi Consular and Sith Inquisitor have not been worked out, I think it is fairly safe to assume that one specialization will be an offensive caster whereas another specialization will be a defensive caster. This is only logical given that these two classes are the only casters in game. This SWTOR guide will be updated when more information is made available.

In addition to the Jedi Consular and the Sith Inquisitor, it appears that the Smuggler (Galactic Republic) and Imperial Agent (Sith Empire) will also have some minor support healing abilities. Some gameplay videos have the Smuggler offering some back-up healing for a party when the healer was out of range.

While specific abilities have not been made public yet, I think it is fairly safe to assume that the Smuggler and Imperial Agent will have some sort of med-pack ability which allows them some healing but either it will be low-powered or on some sort of refractory period. On the other hand, the Sith Inquisitor and Jedi Consular seem to be able to dish out plenty of healing with no cooldown.

It is my hope that the Jedi Consular and Sith Inquisitor do not become pigeon-holed into healing only but rather can have a fun and meaningful solo and small-group play experience. Many players enjoy casters but the clicking of health bars really detracts from the fast-paced action combat that developers have been so eager to implement in the game. It makes no sense┬áto go back to the old-school method of hawking health bars – there is nothing action packed or exciting about a game of whack-a-mole.
